The Mayor of Bafut Council is a Civil Status Registry for the entire Bafut given birth, and residency
We’re legalized to deliver the following services to Bafut natives and residents
Marriage Registration and Certification
§ Documents needed before hand for publication
- For a widow or a widower: death certificate of deceased spouse. Besides, subject to the period of widowhood of 180 days observed from date of death
- In case of remarriage in a monogamous marriage: Judgement of divorce, and certificate of no appeal
- For a second polygamous marriage: marriage certificate where polygamy is indicated
- For the case of servicemen or gendarmes: prior approval of the Ministry of Defence (background checks)
- Declaration of intention of the spouse-to-be (needed for publication one month beforehand)
- Copy of birth certificates of spouses-to-be
- Certificate of celibacy of each of the spouses-to-be
- Proof of of nationality with any of the documents: N.I.C, Passport, residence permit…etc
- Names of witnesses and family heads of the spouses who will be present at the ceremony with their N.I.C, Passport, Residence permit.
- Passport size photograph of with both spouse head joined
- For marriage certificate established on the basis of declaratory judgement: copy of the judgment and certificate of no appeal
All these required documents are for marriage registrations and are deposited at Bafut Council’s Civil Status Registry
Birth Declaration
In health establishment, the head of the hospital or in absence, the medical officer, or any person who witnessed the delivery, can declare the birth. As regards home births, even though it is not spelled out in the law, the traditional ruler is expected to declare all births in his village
After delivery, the person referred to above has 30 days to declare the birth and notify it to Bafut Council Civil Status Registry. Where the birth is not declared within 30 days, the parents have an additional period of 60 days within which to make the declaration before Bafut Council’s Civil Status Registry
After 6 months, a birth may be registered by Bafut Council Civil Status Registry only by virtue of a declaratory judgment from a competent Court of First Instance
Sanctions are provided for, against any person who, though bound to declare birth and for no legitimate reason fails to do so, or makes false or inaccurate declaration.
Death Declaration
Death can be declared to Bafut Council Civil Status Registry if Bafut is the place of death, burial, residence or birth of the deceased within 90 days either by the family head, a relative of the deceased, or any person with a full knowledge of the death.
Death declarations are certified by two witnesses
In the case of death in a hospital or other medical or prison establishment, the head of the said institution can declare the death within ninety (90) days
Any person who though bound to declare death and for no legitimate reason fails to do so, or makes a false or inaccurate declaration shall be punished.
